This is kinda sorta why everything in /bin and /sbin are supposed to be
statically linked (/me looks sharply at Scott).  Assuming the boot loader
works properly, the system will at least start up and file replacement can
proceed[1].

Agreed.

Hmmmm.  It's been around longer, yes, but I have to take issue with
"stability".  Going any further would turn this into an advocacy post ;)

[1] This is something that I _really_ liked about *BSD -- they kept this
    convention.
