The AIC-7890 is apparently *very* different from the AIC-7880 -- the old
drivers just won't work.

Unfortunately, this means that in addition to the Adaptec AHA-2940U2W,
many new motherboards with on-board "u2w" (LVD) scsi won't work either.

Not much point in buying and LVD adaptor unless you've got LVD disks,
cabling, etc.  "Ultra-2" LVD will fall back to single-ended signalling
if you attach non-LVD disks, but what's the point?  I'd recommend
avoiding the 2940U2W for quite a while yet.
