I had a similar problem once, which was caused by a version
of C-lib that (X)Emacs didn't like.  I don't remember which
versions I used.  Maybe you have a libc5 Emacs on a glibc
system or so.

You can check with strace which C library Emacs loads before
it dies and maybe you can figure out with rpm which C
library would be appropriate.
