Function declaration syntax is only slightly different and far more
powerful than aliases.  Since I learned to put parens after the name
and braces around the code, I haven't written a throwaway script---and 
write a lot more of those, let me tell you.

And it has the advantage that you just keep .bashrc in an Emacs buffer 
all day and do M-! "declare -f <function>" to get the text in
there, instead of having to find-file the script ;-)
