OK, tried that. I'm still stuck...

schweiz:~$ alias numf
alias numf='find $1/ -type f | wc -l'
schweiz:~$ numf ~/Mail
wc: /home/schweiz/Mail: Is a directory
      0 /home/schweiz/Mail
Broken pipe
schweiz:~$ 

Is the broken pipe coming from find or wc; how would I know?
