Actually, when I said they were going to cut features to do it, I was quoting
Jesse Berst, editorial director of ZDNet Anchordesk and a guy who tends to
beat the drum for NT pretty hard. Berst, like most every other industry
analyst, recommends not upgrading to NT 5 at all until service pack 1 is
released.

If MS does rush this to market and cut features and shorten the
beta cycle, there is no way that it will be as good of a product as if they
had taken their time with it. Berst expects it to not quite be the NT 5 we
have been expecting, and this is coming from a person who believe that Linux
will never be more than a niche OS, not from an MS basher.

MS has got to be feeling pressured not only by the free UNIX flavors (chiefly
Linux), but also by Sun's continued efforts to advance Java, getting the cost
of an Ultra 5 into the range of a high-end PC, making Solaris (both platforms)
available to private users for about 20 bucks, Intel's call for
standardization of UNIX for the Merced chip, etc. They are going to want to
try and close the window of opportunity for UNIX to fight back as hard and as
quickly as they can, and if that means rushing NT 5 to market, they will.
Even if it means cutting corners.

Cheers,

Jonathan Byrne
