When I worked at SAIC in San Diego, we had a Dec System 10 running Tops 10 in our computer room. It had a few legacy applications that ran on it as part of our daily production. This was in 1988 - 89. Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if they still had it. This was a shop that bought 1960s-vintage printers from the navy data center when they replaced them. And the military tends to keep their hardware until it's so old the Smithsonian doesn't even want it for a museum display anymore :-) To keep those printers running, we had several dead ones as spares, since the only way to get a print train was to have one custom built for about $5,000. And if you think that's not bad enough, check this: they also had a revolving drum printer when I worked there. I'd heard about those things from my dad, but he hadn't seen one since the 1960s, but they had one in 1988 and used it everyday. I wonder if it's still there? :-) Cheers, Jonathan --------------------------------------------------------------- Next Meeting: 10 October, 12:30 Tokyo Station Yaesu central gate Next Nomikai: 20 November, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 --------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsor: PHT, makers of TurboLinux http://www.pht.co.jp
