tlug: specifying executable file names such as emacs

Hello,
under debian, there is a directory called /etc/alternatives/ that
contains symbolic links such as emacs, vi, awk, cc, xemacs, jed. The
links are attached to the actual executable under /usr/bin which might
be called jvim, jed-ja, or emacs20-dl-canna. This is a convenient way to
keep multiple copies of a program such as emacs on a system.
Instead of typing jvim, I can type vi if I use jvim a lot. Alternately,
the link can be set to nvi-I18N if I like nvi better than vim.

I was wondering if Red Hat had this type of standardized location of
storing symbolic links to programs. Or, are the symbolic links
simply stored in /usr/bin/ along with the actual executable?

REgards,
Craig
