Re: tlug: Question about spam

Thanks, everyone, for the thoughtful responses. I was actually a
little afraid I'd get flamed for that question. But once again TLUG
proved to be a civil community of adults.

I wasn't totally unaware of the anti-spam arguments such as (Ken
Harada):

 > I understand spams are telephone call "charge collect", which
 > force us to accept without approval. They waste our money for
 > connection, ISP, disk space, CPU power or whatever related to
 > the delivery of them to us (or third party) without our permission.

And I actually agree with Jonathan that

 > spammers are the scum of the earth and
 > should be placed under a lifetime ban of every owning a computer
 > or working in a job where they are ever required, or allowed, to
 > use a computer for anything.

... but of course everyone's got their priorities, and I get a lot
more upset about genetically altered seeds and the indiscriminate use
of antibiotics (in both medicine and agriculture). But I'm glad some
people react more strongly to spam than I do ... though I occasionally
report abuse to postmasters, I'm sure it's not enough.

Which reminds me ... my activist credentials, such as they were, are
getting a little rusty. But that's another story.
