Well,

I use GIMP version 1.0.0, and glibc 5.4.44, and it built fine....  I 
will admit that
it took FOREVER (2 hours including GTK) to compile, but it built, and it 
workes fine....

Are you sure that it isnt't supposed to build?   Because I just might be 
extremely lucky ... ;-)
