I usually follow this rule: Workstation: Swap = physical RAM size or 32MB, whichever is larger. Server: Swap = (2 * physical RAM size) or 64MB, whichever is larger. Heavily loaded server: 128MB, which is the max size of a swap partition, at least with 2.0.x kernels. I think that the newer 2.1.x kernels which support larger inodes can have larger swap partitions, but I'm not sure on that. Chris Sekiya would probably know for sure, though...
