It can. Look at www.linux.org.uk and click on "ELKS" at their
entry page. ELKS means "Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset" and is
in fact a stripped down Linux kernel plus tools running even on
XT's. There are also plans to make it run on Z80's & Co. and the
6809. Their first distribution, "Blue Bell", isn't out yet,
however. If you need some embedded control stuff, however, it's
worth a try.

(Sigh) Due to lack of time I didn't test it yet. I plan to built
up a small computer system using a 80188 or V25 with 1MB RAM and
a Flash ROM to keep the software in for various control/data
acquisition jobs in my home lab. ELKS appears IDEAL for that
job.....
