Here are all the relevent things that are going on in my system:

.Xdefaults

*preeditType:   Separate,OverTheSpot,OffTheSpot,Root
*IMProtocol: xim
Kinput2*conversionStartKeys:\
  Shift<Key>space \n\
  <Key>Henkan
Kinput2*sendbackKeyPress:       True
*inputMethod:   kinput2

.bashrc

export LANG=ja_JP.ujis

.xsession

if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/kinput2 ] ; then
    /usr/X11R6/bin/kinput2 &
    XMODIFIERS="@example.com=kinput2"
    export XMODIFIERS
fi
LANG=ja_JP.ujis
LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.ujis
export LANG LC_CTYPE

I know somethings are duplications, but it is better to have two then none
I always say.

Also, the version of kinput2 is important. I am using:

kichijoji:~$ kinput2 -version
kinput2 version 2.0 fix 3  (1997/02/03)
        options: [Canna2]

Finally, I found the following in the start-up script for netscape that
was provided by Mr. Egota.

#  1) kinput2 $B5/F0@example.com(B   (-v2-fix3$B$K%Q%C%A$,$"$?$C$F$$$k;v$,A0Ds(B)
#   /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc$B%U%!%$%k$Khttp://kichijoji.mech.tuat.ac.jp/~rob/robw.html
