A null-10BaseT cable (for connecting two Ethernet adapters without a hub) is not too expensive -- similar price as standard twisted pair. I use one to connect my NotePC with my wife's NotePC. Both machines have an Ethernet PCMCIA card, because we sometimes use them in the LAN of Tsukuba-Dai. To copy installations etc from one machine to the other, the 10BaseT connection is great.
