RE: tlug: FreeBSD

I know what you mean. My first exposure to PC UNIX was FreeBSD, about a
year ago. It's not that I exactly wanted to do it, but the network ops
staff told it would be useful to learn UNIX and lent me a FreeBSD 2.2.5 CD
and some very basic installation instructions. While I did manage to get it
installed, I hated it. Not having any documentation or UNIX experience
certainly didn't help (I eventually bought the FreeBSD book, but it was sort
of too little, too late), and I pretty much found it impossible to get my
work done. There were no Japanese packages and I didn't know where to get
any or how to install them, it didn't even support my Japanese keyboard
correctly, etc., etc. After a while I just completely stopped using it, and
shortly after that I reclaimed the partition space for Windows. I, too, am
much more impressed with Linux (although I'm sure FreeBSD has made strides
in the year since I tried it); while I find that the lack of decent end-user
apps for Linux places a lot of hurdles in my path (especially for working in
Japanese), Linux is at least usable and I can spend time with it, something
I wasn't able to do with FreeBSD.
