Voice of experience: if your ISP is configured for PAP authentication only, you will never see a login prompt. If you can connect via minicom/seyon/kermit/whatever but don't get a login prompt (and the line is eventually dropped) trying firing up pppd with the pap-secrets file set up appropriately.
