thank you for this tip.  It works great.

I'm still wondering about patches to tin 1.4 though.

My ISP, is using tin 1.3

I don't think this problem is related to the TurboLinux binary.  I used to have
this problem with tin at home and at work until the system admin at work compiled
tin with something new.  I think that ktin may have been superceded by tin
if tin is compiled with a few nifty command line options.  I think.  Or, maybe
he patched it.  When I asked him, he couldn't remember what he did.  I'm getting
both of the news information from the same nntp server.
