NEW WEB ADDRESS! <http://www.kpca.org/> Check it out! *** ================================================ *** *** Kansai Professional Computing Association News *** *** ================================================ *** MAY PRESENTATION: Title: Parallel Processing System PIM and its applications Speaker: Seiichi Yaskawa, Director of New Business Development Yaskawa Electric Corporation Time: Wednesday, May 20nd, 1998, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Site: Club KARMA's event hall, 5 minutes from Osaka JR No charge for MEMBERS. The PIM, Parallel Inference Machine, is a joint-development of Flavors Technology in the U.S. and Yaskawa Electric in Japan. It is based on the principles of parallel processing, declarative coding, and agent-based programming. Automotive Paint Shop Control in the U.S. and Shinkansen Bullet Train Operation Simulator in Japan are the early successful and large-scale applications. The train operation simulator application along with the PIM theory will be the topics of the talk. Nobody, including major computer system suppliers, has ever achieved as detailed a real-time train operation simulator as that recently built by JR Central and Yaskawa Electric. The unique concept of the PIM, "Consume hardware and save software" made this possible and economical. Various kinds of transportation systems in and out of the factory floor will be a good application arena for the PIM and its concept. Technically speaking, the PIM is the first and only software-parallel system as opposed to all other hardware-parallel computer systems. Thus, ARPA has contracted to study the application of this approach in more detail. Mr. Seiichi Yaskawa has his B.S. & M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tokyo University, and is a member of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. Influencing opinion leaders throughout the world, he is a co-author of "Magnetic Recording"-McGraw Hill, and has recently spoken at the following conferences: Chaos in Manufacturing Conference, Santa Fe, NM, 1998 MODSIM (Modeling and Simulation) 97, Tasmania, Australia, 1997 Embracing Complexity Conference, San Francisco, CA, 1996 Industrial Automation Conference, Chicago, IL, 1995 Yaskawa Electric's homepage includes general information about Yaskawa's industrial equipment, robots, motors, and control systems. <http://www.yaskawa.co.jp/> (Japanese and English) Flavors Technology's homepage features information on the PIM and on Yaskawa's partner company. <http://www.flavors.com/> (English) PRICE: Through special arrangements with Club KARMA, the meeting fee is FREE for paid up annual members, others: 2000 yen. Drinks/food will be available starting at 300/600 yen. Invite your friends! SPEAKERS SOUGHT! The KPCA is looking for speakers for future meetings. Come promote your pet project/product, your career.
