Craig, you're just the sort of guinea pig I've been looking for! :-)

The other day I saw a really nice-looking package called X-ISP. It
sounds wonderful (homepage is at http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/) but I
have neither a phone line nor a modem to test it with. It's available
in the Red Hat FTP archive as an RPM
(ftp://ftp.redhat.com/ftp/pub/contrib/i386/) or from the Debian archive
as a deb package (ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/contrib/binary-i386/),
although the latest version seems to not be on those sites, so you might
want to download it from the X-ISP homepage download area
(http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/download.html) at a .tar.gz instead.

It communicates with pppd, which spawns the xispdial dialer when you
make a connection. It has a nice visual phonebook for supporting
multiple connections, and gives verbose feedback on the progress of your
connection, so you should hopefully be able to see error feedback right
away.

If the seems of interest to you (or if any other tluggers are interested
in it and try it out), please let me know what you think of it. This
looks like a product with the potential to erase yet another of the
ease-of-use advantages of certain other platforms and increase the
strength of Linux as a viable alternative on the desktop.

Cheers,
Jonathan
