Probably personal preference as much as anything, but I'm much more fond of Dan Bernstein's clockspeed etc. than I am of xntpd. Cleaner design, simpler, and *correct*. See http://pobox.com/~djb/proto/utctai.html for details (the clockspeed package is at the end). Compiles and installs without a hitch under linux, just follow the directions in the INSTALL file.
