is the /var/lock directory writable by you?  If not, make it so.  just go
to /var and do 'chown root:jonathan lock' and then 'chmod g+w lock'

Looking at my /var/lock, it's writable by ANYONE, which it probably
shouldn't be, but if it's writable by the user that's using pine, that
should be sufficient.

It's not a problem with the jpine program that's in the RPM - I've got it
installed on our main mail server, so I and all the other pine users at
PHT are using it...
