I must admit that when I first saw it I thought it was the wrong kanji, but
after checking my online dictionary [$@example.com$N<-E5(J on windoze] I found:

$@$D$H(J*$@example.com%$a$k!ZEX$a$k![(Jtry (hard) (to do).*B

$@$D$H(J*$@example.com%$a$k!Z6P$a$k(JN$@%L3$a$k!(B$B6PL3$9$k(J) work (at; in; for). ($@example.com$r(J) play *B
(a leading part). ($@?k9T$9$k(J) serve (as).

Which lead me to think that maybe they were interchangeable. I guess that
this is not the case and that I need a better dictionary.

So $@example.com$a$k(J is to work as in 'to work at something' (try hard) and never means
'work' as in employment?

tim :)
