Y'all probably heard about this one, but just in case ... ________________________________________________________ Program Crash Mars Launch of Windows System Upgrade CHICAGO (AP) Microsoft's "perfect tuneup" for it's widely used operating system needed a tuneup itself: Windows 98 crashed as Bill Gates provided a glimpse of its features at a computer trade show. The system, scheduled to be released in Jun and retailing for about $89, collapsed Monday when a Microsoft employee attempted to plug in a scanner, with his boss alongside. Gates was forced to move to another computer to complete his demonstration of the successor to Windows 95. "I guess we still have some bugs to work out" he noted ruefully. "That must be why we're not shipping Windows 98 yet." Microsoft has been planning to debut the finished version of Windows 98 at the spring Comdex (Computer Dealers Expo), the first major computer trade show of the year. But industry observers said the launch was delayed because of Tuesday's scheduled U.S. appeals court hearing in Washington in the Justice Department's antitrust case against Microsoft. Gates did not comment on the Justice Department case, or an investigation by state attorneys general into possible predatory business practices. Perhaps seeking to defuse criticism that Microsoft has a virtual monopoly that allows it to muscle out smaller competitors, Gates stressed the need for partnership and choice in the personal computer industry. "One way to look at this is to say, 'Well, let's look at all the big companies in the computer industry and say what role does Windows play in their strategy?'" Gates said in his speech. "All of these companies, which are the large companies in this business, all of them except two have Windows as their primary strategy," he said. He noted that the exceptions are IBM corp, which uses Windows and other systems, and archrival Sun Microsystems, which he called "purely anti-Windows and not at all shy about it". "Windows 98 is a very obvious move up from Windows 95" he said. "It is a straight-forward refinement with a lot of neat new things".
