Well, on my system (the one at home), it depends on who I log in as.  If I
log in as root, I hear a bit of disk activity, but nothing happens.  If I
log in as me and type xdm, I get a message that says (sic) "Only root wants
to run xdm."  My instinctive reply to that is "No way!  I want to run it
too" but that doesn't help :-)

Maybe that's related to the problem I'm having with no graphical login even
though I told Xconfigurator I want one, for which you prescribed
change_initrl.pl -8bpp (I'll try that when I get home tonight).
