well, xdm starts (usually) in runlevel 5 if you're using TL or RH.  On
Slackware, I'm not sure how they've got it set up.  Look at /etc/inittab.
Basically xdm runs outside of X.  xdm starts X and puts up a login window.
Then you login and your .xinitrc gets loaded and run (ie, all your startup
apps, window manager, etc).  When you shut down the X session in your wm,
it should go back to xdm, assuming that init is respawning it.

Does 'startx' work on your system?
