I'm having some problems looking >at http://abcb.ml.org/~thb/jp/cathedral-paper-jp.html in I duplicated the problem with Communicator 4.04 under Linux. I was able to view it with Lynx when I set the charset to iso-2022-jp and the encoding to SJIS. With then encoding set to EUC, Lynx also got bad characters for the Japanese, but not as bad as Netscape did. It displays correctly for Netscape running on Windows 95-J (Netscape is localized version, Communicator 4.04). Oddly, on the Windows version, the page displays correctly no matter what you set the encoding to, including English. I guess being a localized version, it must be designed to always display Japanese correctly, no matter what. Could it be the case that the page is being delivered in SJIS and Communicator for Linux won't swallow SJIS? Sounds crazy, I know, but insofar as it seems pretty bug-ridden, maybe that's not as crazy as it seems. Since I duplicated the problem, at least we know it's consistent. I saw on Sun's web site that they now have unsupported HotJava versions that can be downloaded and used for other platforms (no source code, of course). I downloaded it and am going to try to figure out where to put my JDK path in the startup shell script, despite knowing nothing about shell scripting, but I'm not one to let not knowing what I'm doing get in the way of giving it a try :-) If it works, especially if it works better than Communicator, I'll be sure to post it here.
