gzip -9 < origfile > origfile.gz


(not sure if you're asking how here, but just in case...)

might be nice to modify majordomo to manipulate the .gz files directly -
ie, ungzip them to a temp dir, mae the indexes, remove the stuff in the
temp dir, so we don't have to keep 2 copies.
