It mounts them so that it's transparent to the user, but it knows what directories are mounted on what drives. For example, I could have a system with /, /usr, /var, /home, /tmp, /usr/local, and /w95 all on different physical partitions, or even different physical drives if I wanted to. You can get a nice output of what's mounted where with 'mount' by itself, and you can see free disk space with 'df'. If you're not sure what drive a certain subdir is on (ie, /var/lib/crap, in the example above), you can do 'df /var/lib/crap' and it'll tell you the partition and free disk space. -------------------------------------------------- Scott M.
