Another idea for Scott here: How about offering people a choice of kernels? For example, notebook users are generally going to want APM support. Actually, some notebooks (no idea how many, but I've seen two Toshiba models like this, including my own) won't shut down properly without it. And for a first-time Linux user accustomed to Win95, feeling nervous and not sure what Linux can do for them . . . "Me?? Compile a kernel?!" "Sure. It's not that hard. I'll even help you get started." "Easy for you to say. Look, let's just forget the whole thing." I imagine most people who become serious about Linux are eventually going to want to compile their own kernels anyway, but it would be nice for new users to have a few basic options to choose from.
