May I suggest, unless you have to have DAT format, a Seagate CTT8000
internal or its external equivalent, or the other compatible brands
(H-P, ?).  Uses DT-4200 / QIC-3095 tapes, 2 GB (4 GB compressed) ($30)
or Travan TR-4, 4/8 GB ($45).  SCSI.  It backs up my 2.5 GB of data
and reads it back for verification in about 2 hours, and it's a funky
old 486 system.

I've been using it for almost a year and have had no problems yet.
I think they cost $200-$300, but I've forgotten what I paid for it,
and prices have probably dropped since then anyway.
