Hmm, I thought that Debian had a more active user base interested in Japanese. IMO, the Debian-JP project is more organized than the JRPM or PJE projects. Though, the PJE is making progress fast and may be more advanced than the Debian-JP project as I write this. In summary, Red Hat and Debian don't focus on Japanese support. However, they are used as a base to add Japanese support. The Japanese support projects are seperate from the Red Hat or Debian projects, but dependent on them. The three main projects to add Japanese support to Linux are Debian-JP, Project Japanese Extensions, and Project Japanese RPM. There is the alternative of compiling your own. In this case, I think that Red Hat and Debian are about equal in terms of Japanese support. You might want to first identify what you want to do with your Linux system, what specific Japanese tasks you want to do and then take a look at the packages in PJE and Debian-JP to see if they support your needs. Then, look at Red Hat and Debian seperately to see if they meet your general needs. I'm running both and they seem pretty similar. I do have a couple of questions, in Debian, I can see the information of the package with dpkg -I packagename.deb can I get this with RPM? Also, I want to get a file listing before I unpack the rpm file, something similar to tar ztvf filename.tgz Is there an rpm command for this?
