Michael,
I haven't been following this thread, so my comments may be off,
but I'll give it a shot.

As root, edit /etc/resolv.conf and add lines like

  nameserver 192.135.222.9
  nameserver 192.135.222.5

You have to change this to the DNS numbers for your ISP.  The
above numbers will not work from outside of my ISP.

In your /etc/hosts file do something like

 127.0.0.1 	localhost
 202.237.148.543	yourmachine  yourmachine.domain.com

in your /etc/host.conf file

   order hosts,bind
   multi on
