Michael,

One of the problems you are having is caused by AT&T using CHAP/PAP
authentication for logins.  You need to make sure you have created the
CHAP/PAP files in your /etc/ppp directories.  If you try out the AT&T
Worldnet link I mentioned earlier, you'll find the information you need.
