oh yeah, I am only supported at 8-bits with XFree :( so I
forgot about the 16 bpp option.

Also, theres WindowMaker, which seems more appropriate to this
list since it supports internationalization quite handily.  It
also has some ability to dither it's icons on-the-fly...

Regardless of what WM/icons you use, if you're stuck in 8-bit land
you can run X with the -cc 4 option (startx -- -cc 4).  This tells
your machine to pretend it has 16 bits, but to use the closest
available color to display.  Unfortunately, the Java port doesn't
seem to like this and it drives Xforms programs into private cmap
mode.  If you start up  with "xstdcmap -default" in your .xinitrc
you'll get a nice spread of colors.. run netscape or ImageMagick 
with "-visual Default".
