Sounds to me like you're encountering a java applet which is
crashing Netscape. There's a problem with recent versions of
libc. Craig posted a work-around some months ago:

-----------------------------------------------------------
jim:/usr/local/lib/netscape$ ls -l
total 1
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           18 Oct 28  1996 libc.so.5
-> /lib/libc.so.5.0.9*
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root          117 Oct 28  1996
netscape.sh*
jim:/usr/local/lib/netscape$ cat netscape.sh
#!/bin/sh
libdir=/usr/local/lib/netscape
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$libdir; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
exec /hdd/netscape/netscape
-----------------------------------------------------------

Of course your paths may be different. This solved the problem
for me with 3.0 (I still do a lot of surfing with 2.02 - it's
much more stable.)
