  My machine in Canada is 'in the middle of nowhere' - at the end of an
overloaded twenty-five kilometer run of telephone line.  My experience was
that I can never connect at more than 14,4K .  Equipment on both ends 
supports connection at at least twice that speed, but the line itself
is just too noisy.  I thank my lucky stars that it works at all.
They wouldn't even build that line today and ISDN is out of the question.
