They are correct--as soon as you're looking at chat scripts with things matching for "login:", you're going down the wrong path. PAP and CHAP, as I understand it, work outside this chat-script approach. Win95 uses PAP or CHAP, which is why you can just enter a login-name and password and it'll log right in. It seems that the most likely place for this information on your Linux system is /etc/ppp (? /etc/pppd?), a filename something like "chap-secrets". There was a discussion about the format of this file on the list about a week ago.
