*If* /dev/hda2 is an ext2 filesystem, then you are observing correct
behavior.

The ext2 filesystem reserves (hmm, I think it's five percent) of the
filesystem for the super-user (it's the -m option in mke2fs).  Here's an
example of my hard drive usage:

Filesystem         1024-blocks  Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda2            1178327 1001264   116180     90%   /

I should have 177063 blocks free, but df returns a number just under 60Kb
smaller due to the reserved overhead.
