There should be help on this at GOL; I'm pretty sure they provide uqwk 
service.

Basically, though what happens is that uqwk crunches up the newsgroups 
you're normally interested in and (like a newsreader) keeps track of
what you've already read.  So you only get the downloads you need.

SOUP is the standard format for doing this.
