ext2 v0.5b *does not* work properly with removeable media.  You need
to futz around to get the thing (I don't know if it's the fs or the
scsi driver) to reread the partition table.  I don't remember the
details, I don't use the MO drive very much at the moment.

Your problem may be different, but that's been consistent for me.
