I'm not sure if Jim S. is using Redhat.  Though, I do think that
RPM would solve his problem because I think it was a problem with
directories.

When the file is untarred, you can specify the directory it goes
into with -C

example:

	tar ztvf apache_1.1-linux-ELF.tar.gz -C /usr/local/etc/

If it spits out something like httpd-1.1 or something do:

  # cd /usr/local/etc
  # mv httpd-1.1 httpd
