Indeed, Linux (for the x86) has SMP for quite a while - somewhere around 1.3.x - we are using it on two systems - a dual P5-90 (Asus MB) and a dual P5-100 (P5-90 overclocked, GigaByte MB) - and it works without any problems. It will also run PVM (parallel virtual machine) programs for workstation clusters, but cache contention can be a performance problem, dual P5-90 SMP = 1.4-1.5 times speed-up, two P5-90 systems about 1.8-1.9 times speed-up.
