If you have unlimited time, you can look under the hood of binary files.  
Andrew Schulman did that with DOS, Netware, and later Windows, and Matt 
Peitrick did that with windows before he started working at MS.  

For DOS there used to be a nifty program called "sourcer" from V 
communications.  I know of at least one legit use of that tool where a 
programmer lost his source and used this tool to recover it rather than 
re-write it!

I would presume tools in this area have advanced in the past 10 years or so.

Hear, hear.  Use what works for you.  "Mainstream" is not always
healthy, IMHO (it is not for me), but it is for most people (otherwise 
it wouldn't be "main stream"!)

It's too bad you can't "look under the hood" of the mainstream
software, though.
