I can help you on how to put a graphic in the root window. (I'm not even sure I understood the other two questions, but let me if you ever find the answer). I use xv in the following line from .xinitrc to do just that; xv -root -rmode 5 -quit /home/dali/sleep.jpg Look at the xv manual for more info. Dennis McMurchy, Tojinmachi, Fukuoka
