Craig> Is there any trick that I can do to allocate system DRAM to Craig> processor cache (dream on huh?) or any way to make better Craig> use of my RAM. Why "processor cache"? Processor cache is *faster* memory. That's why it's expensive. Allocating system DRAM to the processor's cache just adds an extra memmove to the pipeline; it can't speed up access. Just use it as RAM :-); I regularly am swapping with 32 MB :-P I append my current "top" and "ps ax" figures: there's not that much running, I don't have any of my other users logged in, I'm not rebuilding the kernel, etc etc. Now I could recover about 5MB instantaneously by flushing Netscrap's RAM cache, I think, and there's something screwy going on with the crond, maybe it's leaking memory too. Cannaserver uses a fair amount. But mostly, "X expands to fill up the available RAM, and then some." That's why we use "X" as a variable, because it varies! I forget the phone number (try Dial-104 :-), but they deliver, at least in the Ohio State campus area. ;-) -- Stephen John Turnbull University of Tsukuba Yaseppochi-Gumi Institute of Policy and Planning Sciences http://turnbull.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp/ Tennodai 1-1-1, Tsukuba, 305 JAPAN turnbull@example.com -- Appendix ------------------------------------------------------------ turnbull:~$ top Mem: 31100K av, 30584K used, 516K free, 8516K shrd, 1728K buff Swap: 33692K av, 7216K used, 26476K free Cached: 9016K [snip] turnbull:~$ ps xa PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 1 con 1W 21:59 init 2 s00 1 0:00 (kflushd) S 1 3 s00 1 0:00 (kswapd) S 1 46 psf 4 206:31 /usr/sbin/crond -l10 66 psf 6 N 0:19 /usr/sbin/syslogd 68 psf 6 0:00 /usr/sbin/klogd 70 psf 7 N 1:02 /usr/sbin/inetd 77 psf 7 3:18 /WWW/httpd -f /WWW/conf/httpd.conf 91 psf 9 0:00 (agetty) S 1 1978 psf 1 N 0:00 (lpd) S 1 3943 s39 3 N 0:00 (agetty) S 1 4145 psf 4 1:40 X :0 4225 v47 4 N 0:00 color_xterm -sb -sl 500 -j -ls -fn 7x14 -cr blue 87 psf 8 N 0:00 /usr/local/canna/bin/cannaserver 1417 v47 1 7:14 (bash) S 1 4143 v47 4 0:00 (startx) S 1417 4144 v47 4 0:00 (xinit) S 4143 4147 v47 4 0:00 (sh) S 4144 4150 v47 4 N 0:00 xman 4151 v47 4 < 0:00 oclock -geometry -5+95 -bd cyan -fg cyan 4152 v47 4 < 0:00 xbiff -geometry 100x50-5+235 -name me 4153 v47 4 < 0:00 xbiff -geometry 100x50-5+320 -volume 15 -name w3pro -file / 4154 v47 4 < 0:00 xbiff -geometry 100x50-5+405 -volume 15 -name comp -file /h 4155 v47 4 < 0:00 xbiff -geometry 100x50-5+490 -volume 15 -name hw -file /hom 4156 v47 4 < 0:01 mule -name Mule -i -iconic -font 7x14 4157 v47 4 N 0:41 fvwm 4190 v47 4 < 1:36 netscape 4226 pq1 4 0:00 -bash 7633 pq1 7 0:00 ps xa
