I checked, with dwlb as the bar, (works in Fedora and FreeBSD), or labwc
with waybar--again in Fedora or FreeBSD, though in RH and clones I can
build labwc pretty easily now).

I have a real basic waybar, just to show the time and open applications. I
blush to admit that I've commented out most of it.

Neither Fedora nor FreeBSD require Wayland, I just wanted to make sure I
could use it if necessary. Totally anecdotal, but when I hook my laptop to
the TV to watch stuff, Wayland gives a far smoother picture than what I get
with X11. This holds for both FreeBSD and Fedora.
