I think that may be exactly what happened.  I tried it again today and it came back to life - as an updated version.  I had been running version 24.08.3 and it came back to life today as version 24.11.70.  With Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, there were always notifications about updates, but since 24.04, many things have gotten a bit strange (and buggy) and I've already found that Chromium is doing automatic background updates with no notification about it (until after the fact), so I guess when I couldn't use Kdenlive, it was in the middle of a background update....?  For the moment at least, it's working again!
