I find that putting this in .mailcap:

	text/html; w3m -I %{charset} -O UTF-8 -T text/html; copiousoutput;
	text/plain; w3m -I %{charset} -dump; copiousoutput;

... and this in muttrc:

	auto_view text/html text/plain

... normalizes everything so long as the content-type matches the payload.
Especially with the *very special* nearly-iso2022-jp emitted by certain banks.
