FWIW, checking USB support and installing the Extension Pack/Guest
Additions works on my machine.
I have an old piece of ham radio equipment that can only be programmed
with Windows XP and a USB cable. After launching the Windows XP guest I
"claim" the particular USB device for the guest by clicking the USB
connector icon in the VirtualBox UI (or the Devices...USB Devices menu)
and everything "just works."
