Especially since it used to work out-of-the-box. For Ubuntu 9 and 10
all I had to do was go to System/Administration/Language Support,
tick the box next to Japanese and set the IME to IBUS. From then on

For me (Linux Mint and Ibus, "works"), this "toggle" is a problem, because when I'm typing something in Japanese and need to go in and out from Roman, *sometimes* I keep getting dropped into Cyrillic. вакару десхоу? I suppose it's hopeless to ask anyone to consider people who want to use three writing systems...
